Description The gectiveness of dehulling of sunflower seeds was studied as a function
of characteristics of the seed (variety, size and moisture) and of operating
conditions (feed rate and impeller speed). The overall performance was
expressed in terms of shelling efficiency and fines production. Variety EC-
68415 showed greater shelling efficiency and percent fines than the
Morden variety. Shelling eficiency and percent fines increased with (i,
increase in size of seed, (ii) increase in impeller speed, (iii) decrease in feed
rate, and (iv) decrease in the seed moisture content. Equations relating
shelling ejkiency to moisture content, impeller speed and feed rates for
the Morden variety are proposed.
