Description The liver concentration of the multlenzyme system convertin4 Ialucuronolactone to ascorbic
acid in the rat increases with the casein content of the diet and reaches a maximum at 10 per cent
level. The quality of the protein has also a profound influence. The liver content of the enzyme
8ystem is very low on diets containing 10 per cent l1elatin, and is enhanced severalĀ·fold upon
supplementing adequately with methionine and tryptophan. Althoul1h the activity of the enzyme
system is lower in starved rats than in rats fed a protein-free diet, the urinary excretions are
higher. The probable cause8 for this intriguinl1 observation are dfscu8sed.
