Description |
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn.) is an intensely flavoured tropical fruit which has nine genera with eighty six species out of which Garcinia has total about sixty eight species which are edible or can be used as root stocks. It grows in areas with high temperature, high humidity and abundant rainfall. The fruit is delicious among the tropical fruits due to its characteristic flavour. Mangosteen fruits can be stored at low temperature (9- 12°C) for about a month. The fruit is a rich source of sugars, minerals and vitamins, hence it is suitable for processing into preserve as manggis halwa or as candies. Other products such as fruit juice, squash, jam, jelly and canned segments can also be prepared from mangosteen fruit. The aroma and flavour of mangosteen are stable at low temperatures. Frozen mangosteen rinds have a good colour, texture, taste and overall quality. |
