Description The strains tolerated wide pH r levels varied under different growth media. Nannochloropsis was tolerant to CO2 up to 10% v/v in walne’s medium while in ASW medium the maximum growth was obtained at 2%, while growth was inhibited at 10% CO2. Similar response was shown by Chlorella however it could tolerate upto 15% CO2 v/v. The EPA content of Chlorella increased up to 12% under CO2 supplementation when grown in ASW medium. The strains had better growth under high light intensity and accumulated more lipid. The other major fatty acids observed were palmitic (C-16:0), palmito-oleic (C-16:1), oleic acid (C-18:1) apart from EPA. Efficient harvesting method using flocculation was devised for the strains. Among the various flocculants evaluated such as alkali, potash alum, ferric chloride and ferric sulphate, auto-flocculation by pH adjustment to 10.3 was best with over 90% cell removal efficiency. The outdoor scale up studies of Nannochlooropsis was performed in circular cement ponds and the strain tolerated open outdoor conditions. The study summarizes the biomass and lipid accumulation potential of two strains with nutritionally and therapeutic value.
