Description The present study was conducted in Banswara district of Rajasthan in order to ascertain the knowledge level and training needs of tribal livestock owners. A total of 120 tribal livestock owners were selected as respondents from 8 selected villages of 2 tehsils of the district. The study revealed that majority of the tribal livestock owners were belonging to middle age group, illiterate, having medium family size, small land holding, medium livestock holding, moderate socio-economic status, moderate gross annual income, low income from animal husbandry, moderate mass-media exposure and moderate extension contact. The study also depicted that majority of the respondents possessed moderate level of overall knowledge followed by low and high overall knowledge. Tribal livestock owners had highest knowledge in health care practices followed by breeding, feeding and management practices. It was found that education, land holding, membership of milk co-operative society, livestock holding, socio- economic status, mass media exposure, total income and income from animal husbandry had positive and significant association while age had negative and significant association. The study, further revealed that majority of tribal livestock owners had moderate level knowledge based training need followed by high and low training need. In different areas, tribal livestock owners had highest knowledge based training needs in feeding and management practices followed by breeding and health care practices. It was found that age had positive and significant association while education, land holding, membership of milk co-operative society, livestock holding, socio- economic status, mass media exposure, income from animal husbandry and total income had negative and significant association with knowledge based training needs. The study further reflected that that majority of the tribal livestock owners possessed moderate level of overall perceived training needs followed by low and high perceived training needs. In different areas, tribal livestock owners perceived highest training needs in health care practices followed by breeding, feeding and management practices in descending order of priority. Education, socio-economic status and land holding had positive and significant association. Whereas, age had negative and significant association with perceived training need. Tribal livestock owners opined that the training programme should be organized in the month of April and May for a duration of one week, at their own village level along with some incentives given. The results also revealed that lack of grazing pasture land, repeat breeding problem in animals, high cost of feed/fodder and poor production status of livestock were the major constraints faced by tribal.
