Description |
Agriculture is the largest employer in our country. Among the agriculture; vegetable growing is more remunerative and provide more employment although it is labour intensive. The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is a grass root level institute exclusively meant for testing and transfer of agricultural and allied technology to bridge the gap between the production and productivity as well as to increase self-employment opportunities among the farming communities.A study was undertaken for a statistical impact analysis of KVK on vegetable cultivation in Jajpur district of Odisha. The study was conducted with primary data as well as collecting information from 40 trained and 40 untrained vegetable growers by KVK Jajpur. Analysis of data revealed that the area and productionof total vegetables in Jajpur district were almost constant during the year 2003-04 to 2007-08. But there was continuous increase with maximum production of 322288 MT in the year 2013-14and maximum increase in area of 24209 ha. in the year 2012-13. At the same time;the yield of the total vegetables is continuously increasing with maximum of 13.87 MT/ha in the year 2013-14. The annual percentage growth rate i.e. C.G.R. over the years on area, production and yield of vegetables was slowly increasing in almost all the years. The growth rate of cabbage on area (36.99%), production (37.99%) and growth rate on yield of brinjal crop was remained (3.26%) at the top.Majority of (66.25%) of the respondents were having medium socio-economic status. Education, social participation, extension contact, cosmopolitness, sources of information, house type, holding size and annual income were the important variables found to have better associationship. Better adoption were observed on variety, transplanting, cultural management, implements used as well as disease & pest management. Considerable gaps were observed on nursery raising and nutrient management.Significant gaps were observed on developments particularly technological (24.67%), Social (21.00%), infrastructural (33.00%), input use (34.67%), material possession (19.67%) and farm activities (25.00%). The respondents had expressed more constraints on marketing of the produce followed by infrastructural facilities, technological backstopping, credit and finance as well as input supply. The findings concluded that the farmers have affinity towards vegetable cultivation due to more income generation. The constraints expressed by the respondents need to be well taken up both by KVK and related developmental departments for the upliftment of the farming community. |
