Description A field experiment on different sorghum cultivars
namely CSV SR, SPV 504, SPV 913, M 35-1 and SPH
504 was conducted in red sandy loam soils at the farm
of National Research Centre for sorghum, Rajendranagar
with a view to study their root growth, water extraction
pattern, nutrient uptake and drought tolerance
capacities. The stu~ies indicated that a maximum grain
yield of 8730 kg ha was observed in SPV 504 followed
by SPV 913, CSV SR, SPH 504 and M 35-1. A minimum
quantity of wFter of 29.33 cm was extracted by CSV BR
followed by pPV 504 which extracted 31.0 cm during the
entire growth period. The maximum uptake of N a~~
Po observed in SPV 504 were 224.05 and 54.81 kg ha
ris~ectively. A maximum drought tolerance index of 7.7
was observed in M 35-1 followed by 7.62 in SPV 504. A
water extraction of 7.5 per cent lower, root contribution
of 15.5 per cent higher and a grain yield of 34.9
per cent higher were observed in SPV 504 than in the
local variety M 35-1. The studies clearly indicated
that SPV 504 was found to be superior to CSV BR, SPV
913, M 35-1 and SPH 504 in extracting lower quantity of
water, withstanding to relatively better drought conditions
and in achieving maximum grain yields under
rainfed conditions of agriculture in the red chalka
soils of Rajendranagar.
