Description |
India is gifted with a great diversity of livestock, among which small ruminants like sheep rearing is vital in Indian economy due to its peculiar features. Odisha has a sheep population of 15.81 lakh (19th livestock census) and it is one among the states having good number of sheep population. The distribution of Kendrapara sheep mainly extends from Bhadrak district to Nimapara (Konark) town of the Puri district of Odisha. Purposive sampling was followed to select the respondents of the study. A list of variables was prepared by taking several factors based on which the data were collected from the farmers. A total of 12 parameters with respect to socio-economic profile of the sheep farmers, 7 parameters on production potential of the sheep and 5 parameters with regard to constraints in management of sheep keeping have been studied critically by taking 120 farmers and 742 Kendrapara sheep with differential sex and age. The Statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, standard error, frequency, percentage, ranking, correlation coefficient and regression analysis were used for the analysis of processed data. From the recent study it was found that the livestock farming system always depends on the socio-economic profile of the farming community rearing the species, production potential of the species or breed, distribution and population dynamics of the species in the native tract and constraints in each step in managing the species. Farmers with age ranging from 35 to 55 years are more involved in sheep rearing having an annual income of less than 30000 rupees. The Kendrapada sheep are reared under extensive system of management almost on grazing only having no shed or kutcha ones without much sanitation. The average body weight at marketing was found to be 17.12 kg in females and 18.61 kg in males. The farmers solely depend upon the middleman for marketing activities by which they are getting exploited. Restriction of grazing, lack of government interventions for scientific practice and complicated procedure for availing loan are the major constraints associated with the farmers rearing kendrapada sheep. The population dynamics of kendrapada sheep showed a declined trend over the decades which may be associated with the shortening of grazing land, constraints in marketing the animals and industrialization, however the potentiality of kendrapada sheep in terms of body weight, meat quality, prolificacy and resistance to disease has been the stimulating force for the farmers taking this enterprise. |
