Description Aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties are preferred world-wide since ages because of
the excellent aroma and palatability. More than hundred of traditional land races of aromatic rice
with pleasant aroma are being cultivated in different parts of Odisha. But the farmers are not
growing these varieties because of low yield and lack of marketing facilities. Now, realising the
demand in the market, to improve the economy of farmers, an investigation was carried out to
characterize and evaluate the aromatic short grain rice in the state for identification and
popularization of promising cultivars with higher seed yield and better seed quality for seed
production as well as for documentation and crop improvement.. Twenty five aromatic short grain
rice varieties were selected from the rice germplasm of Rice Research Station, O.U.A.T,
Bhubaneswar and were grown there during kharif 2014 in RBD with three replications. The
varieties were characterized by 41 (28 qualitative + 13 quantitative) morphological descriptors
adopted from the DUS guidelines of PPV and FR Authority, Govt. of India. Genotypic diversity
for seed yield and quality was measured in terms of nine plant and panicle characters namely,
days to flowering and maturity, plant height, effective tillers/plant, panicle length, filled
grains/panicle and unfilled grains percentage, seed yield per plant and hectare; six seed characters
namely, 1000-seed weight, seed length and width, kernel length and width, L/B ratio; two
biochemical characters (seed moisture and amylose content) and four seed sowing quality
parameters namely, germination, field emergence, vigour and storability. Vigour was assessed
through vigour index and conductivity of seed leachate. Storability of seeds was predicted by
accelerated ageing technique. Genotypic variations in respect of most of the qualitative and
quantitative characters used for characterization of the 25 varieties were observed. Among the 41
characters studied, 16 were monomorphic, 8 dimorphic and 17 polymorphic. Among the characters
evaluated for seed yield and quality parameters, significant differences were observed for all
characters except seed moisture content. Among the characters studied, number of effective
tillers/plant, unfilled grains percentage, seed yield/plant, seed length and kernel length-breadth
ratio contributed most to the genetic variation. Highest seed yield of 25.27 q/ha was observed in
the variety Karpurabasa followed by Nua-kalajeera (22.65 q/ha) and Nua-acharamati (21.57 q/ha).
These varieties also exhibited significant variations in respect of all the seed quality parameters.
The aromatic rice varieties Chatianaki, Nua-acharamati, Bishnubhog and Karpurabasa possessed
better seed quality and storability. Based on seed yield and quality attributes, the two mediumduration
varieties
namely,
Karpurabasa
(brown
seeded)

and Nua-acharamati (straw seed colour)
are considered suitable for quality seed production under coastal climatic conditions of Odisha.
