Description |
Experiment to assess heterosis and combining ability for yield and quality traits in onion was conducted involving three lines and thirty two testers. Analysis of variance indicated significant variability among all genotypes for traits under study. Among parents, line 97A and 30A, and among testers CT-1202, CT-1207, CT-1205 and CT-1210 found good general combiners for yield, bulb weight, polar diameter, equatorial diameter and TSS. Cross 65A x CT-1213 exhibited highest specific combining ability for total bulb yield. The ratio of σ2SCA/ σ2GCA for bulb yield, average bulb weight, polar diameter, equatorial diameter, bulb shape index, TSS and weight loss during storage indicated the predominance of non-additive gene action for inheritance of these traits. Cross 97A × CT-1207, 30A × CT-1207 and 65A × CT-1202 exhibited 32.43, 32.23 and 19.93 percent standard heterosis, respectively and should further be evaluated for commercial use.
