Description Betel vine is an important horticultural crop of aesthetic and commercial values. This adequately justifies its nomenclature as the “GREEN GOLD OF INDIA”. The vast economic potentiality of the crop can be adequately established by the fact that about 20-30 million people consume betel leaves in India on a regular basis besides those in other countries of the world which may include over 2 billion consumers. It is cultivated in India about 75,000 hectares with an annual production worth about Rs. 1000 millions. Its cultivation is highly labour intensive and offers employment to about 2.0 million families engaged in cultivation and marketing of betel leaf throughout country. Considering the scope and importance of betelvine in Odisha a study was carried out at farmer's field at ten villages of Nimapara block of Puri district of Odisha. Observations revealed that most of the farmers were planted betel vine in the month of July to August at a spacing of 1mx1m and harvesting of betel vine leaves was started from 4 to 6 months after planting, Betel leaf was plucked four to five times in a month from vine. The productive life span of the vine was about 12- 15 years. The peak harvesting season was from November to December. The crop yield was less in first year, maximum in middle and less towards end. On an average 30 to 50 lakh leaves/ha/year were obtained. The picked leaves are washed cleaned, and sorted in different grades according to size, colour, texture and maturity and their chewing quality
