Description |
Seed is the basic and crucial input for successful crop production, which holds the key to the farm productivity and profitability. The advent of modern plant breeding and technology advances in seed industry has played a significant role in evolution of high yielding varieties and hybrids.. It is estimated that good quality seeds of improved varieties can contribute about of 20-25 percent increase in production. Thus good quality seeds are seeds of green revolution. Groundnut is the major oilseed of India. It accounts for around 25% of the total oilseed production of the country. Annual production of Indian Peanuts and Indian Peanuts oil are around 5-8mln and 1.5mln tons respectively. Peanuts Production is highly vulnerable to rainfall deviations and display huge fluctuation between years. With a view to enhancing the production of certified seeds and to ensure their adequate availability to the farmers at Govt. approved sale rate, Odisha State Seeds Corporation limited has been designated as the nodal agency for production and distribution of certified seeds to the farmers of the state. In order to diversify its operations in the area of certified seed production and distribution and also to avail the benefit of financial assistance under Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, (ISOPOM), production of certified seeds of oilseeds, pulses will be undertaken by OSSC through certified seed producing organizers in addition to its own seed village scheme. The present study is intended primarily as a research initiative to serve as the basis of making an in depth analysis of the issues relating to the production, processing and marketing aspects of the seeds of groundnut in Odisha, with reference to the district of Puri. However, there is an urgent need for the State Seed Corporations also to transform themselves in tune with the industry in terms of infrastructure, technologies, approach and the management culture to be able to survive in the competitive market and to enhance their contribution in the national endeavour of increasing food production. It also attempts to put forth suggestions to improve the groundnut seed sector in the state. Some issues related to seed multiplication and delivery systems in India are discussed here. |
