Description Papaya is a very important fruit crop recognized all over the world owing to its multiple utility viz. dessert & culinary purposes, preparation of a number of value added products including the extraction of papain. However, the germination and sex expression are major problems encountered since time immemorial. Taking the previous works done in these aspects to account this experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Research Station of OUAT, Bhubaneswar during December, 2014 to July, 2015.
The experiment was conducted in two phases. The first phase was the germination study. It comprised of ten treatments of pre-soaked seeds: one control i.e. soaking in distilled water, six different concentrations of GA3 & three different concentrations of KNO3 ( Control, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 & 1000 ppm GA3; 0.25, 0.5 and 1M KNO3 and numbered from T1 to T10 respectively). 50 numbers of seeds, one each per polybag in 50 small polybags were sown under each treatment with three replications laid out in CRD inside the poly house on 4th December, 2014. The observations were recorded for the days to first seed germination, number of seeds germinated on the first day of germination, days to 50 % seed germination, number of seeds germinated on the day of 50% seed germination, number of seeds germinated at 45 DAS, percentage of germination at 45 DAS, seedling height at 45 DAS, seedling girth at 45DAS, and number of leaves at 45 DAS.
The second phase comprised of planting of ten seedlings from each treatment in three replications laid out in RBD in the field at 1.5m x 1.5m spacing to study the sex expression. Planting was done on 18th February, 2015 and the management of the experiment was done following recommended package of practices. Observations on plant growth parameters at flowering time and the sex expression were recorded.
From the results of the experimental data after statistical analysis and careful study of the values of different parameters obtained it was revealed that the growth regulator treated seeds had a positive impact over all the characters studied under germination & sex expression as compared to the control. Soaking of the seeds of papaya in 500 ppm GA3 for 24 hours prior to sowing gave early germination and higher percentage of germination, higher plant height as compared to other treatments and control. It also recorded early sex expression and higher percentage of female plants as compared to other treatments and control. The soaking of seeds in 250 ppm GA3 , 0.5 M KNO3 also recorded results lower than but at par with 500 ppm soaking treatment for most of the characters studied.
