Description A correct identity of the pestiferous species revolves around the correct
identification of the entire group of related species. This situation is however, lacking
with respect to pestiferous Melolonthinae on India and as a result, the work on this group
is getting more and more complex. The present study is concentrated on two genera of
the Tribe Melolonthini, namely Holotrichia Hope and Leucopholis Dejean, with the
specimens available in the collections of the AINP on White grubs and other soil
arthropods at the Department of Entomology, UAS, GKVK, Bangalore. The study was
based on the morphological characters and the structure of male genitalia. This revealed
the presence of 10 genera with a total of 31 species in the collections. The study found
Holotrichia Hope, Sophrops Fairmaire, Brahmina Blanchard, Anomalochela Moser,
Miridiba Reitter, Pseudopanotrogus Petrovitz, Schizonycha Dejean and Leucopholis
Dejean along with two new genera, Arrowiana gen. nov. and Amiridiba gen. nov. in the
collections. This study revealed four new species namely Sophrops viraktamathi sp. nov.,
Pseudopanotrogus keithi sp. nov., Arrowiana veereshi sp. nov. and Amiridiba cocaabiae
sp. nov. The study also contributed three new combinations, Sophrops iridipennis
(Brenske), S. sculpticollis (Blanchard) and S. andamana (Brenske), which were earlier
described under the genus Holotrichia Hope. Study of geographical distribution patterns
shows that, Holotrichia Hope, Miridiba Reitter , Sophrops Fairmaire and Schizonycha
Dejean are distributed all over India, Anomalochela Moser was reported only from South
India, Pseudopanotrogus Petrovitz is restricted to North East India. The two new genera
Arrowiana gen. nov. and Amiridiba gen. nov. were reported only from Karnataka. Even
though the Genus Brahmina Blanchard is distributed all over India, the specimens studied
here are only from South India.
