Description |
The present study was undertaken to know the “Prospects and Problems of vegetable export from Punjab.’’ The objectives mainly focused on the personal profile of vegetable growers, their awareness regarding different aspects associated with vegetable export and problems and prospects as perceived by them. Twenty five respondents representing each export zone (i.e. five districts) as identified by APEDA were selected from a cluster of villages in each district where intensive vegetable cultivation was being practiced. Thus, a total of 125 vegetable growers selected through simple random procedure constituted the sample of study. The finding revealed 42.50 per cent of the respondents were from the age group of 31- 48 years. More than fifty per cent (52 .00%) of them had medium level of education and 53.60 per cent belonged to joint families. Further, 30.40 per cent of vegetable growers always listened to farm broadcasts for gaining information. Majority of farmers were growing vegetables in 1 -8 acres of land. Also, cent per cent respondents (100%) started vegetable export to augment family of income and adopted contract farming approach to sell their raw produce through multinational agencies / APEDA to overseas markets. There was an absolute lack of awareness in respondents regarding processing of an export order for overseas selling of vegetable produce i.e acknowledging the export order, its specification, pre–shipment inspection payment condition, special packaging etc. whereas more then fifty per cent of respondents were not aware about procurement of Quality seeds and planting materials, export development agencies, value of organic manure, credit facility provided by NABARD and effect of green house or poly house on vegetable yield and quality production. Majority (89.60%) was also not aware about the government channels/ agencies available for marketing of produce. Major problems perceived by vegetable growers were related to the processing of vegetables followed by start up problems and infrastructural and transport related difficulties. Marketing problems was the lowest ranked problem as perhaps no respondent |
