Description The research study entitled “Empowerment of Rural Women Through Women Dairy Cooperative Societies in Coastal districts of Odisha” was conducted in Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha. 100 WDCS members having 5 years or more membership experience in WDCS activities, based on their performance on dairying activities were selected as sample. 48 per cent of the respondents were of the middle age group (36 to 50 years). These age group were proactive and interested to take up dairying for their livelihood. The members having higher education were less involved in WDCS activities. 75 per cent of WDCS members were having nuclear family. 64 per cent of WDCS members had bank balance of less than `10,000. Today dairying is no more confined to caste barriers as 10 per cent of WDCS members had taken up dairy as source of income apart from their caste occupation. 44 per cent were having cycles as a means of communication followed by 43 per cent owning two wheelers and 9 per cent having four wheelers. 52 per cent belonged to general caste followed by 34 per cent OBC , 13 per cent SC and 1 per cent ST. 52.4 per cent of WDCS members strongly agreed that there has been economic empowerment. 94 per cent members invest more money in accumulation of asset rather than fixed deposit. 25 per cent of the WDCS members were having more than `20,000/-annum of income from dairying. 65 per cent did not have fixed deposits of any kind. There was highest change with respect to cultural domain i.e. 61.9 per cent in comparison to other four empowerment domains. 51 per cent developed courage for mobilizing other women against social taboos. 61.9 per cent had change in cultural empowerment within them. 61.5 per cent of WDCS member developed psychological empowerment, 23.2 per cent became politico-legally empowered and 52 per cent improved participation in community activities. 51.7 per cent have achieved high level socio-cultural empowerment, 48.5 per cent politico-legal and 23.8 per cent economic empowerment. Members awarded first rank to the existing well coordinated milk marketing system for their success, whereas they ranked first the financial constraints of the self and family as the main factor for failure. The suggestion of timely supply of subsidized cattle feed was ranked first. Correlation study reveals that education had positive and significant association with age of the respondents. It is therefore, concluded that WDCS members were significantly empowered economically, psychologically, socially, politico-legally and culturally being associated with dairy business activities .
