Description Onion is the largest vegetable produced and consumed not only in India but also in the world.
Although it is classified as vegetable, it has special qualities, which add to taste and flavour to a crop of national importance and considerable attention has been paid by the National Agricultural Research System of the country to the improvement of this crop. The annual production of onion in Odisha has reached 4.19 lakh M. T during the year 2011-12 against2.62 lakh MT in the year2007-08. The average productivity of Odisha was 11,920 kg/ ha in comparison to national average of15106 kg/ ha. In Odisha the highest productivity of 14373 kg/ ha has been recorded in Bolangir district. Onion is grown in almost every district with Bolangir, Angul and Kalahandi at the top. In Odisha few food and hence it is mainly used in Indian cuisine and culinary preparations. Onion is consumed by all classes of people – poor and rich and hence, assumes a place of essential item. Onion is such role model go down are existing in villages like Jeranga, Bhagirathipur in Angul district and some other places of Titilagarh Subdivision, Remal of Sambalpur district etc. The study was carried out in Titlagarh subdivision during the year 2015. Following the random sampling 20 farmer respondents were selected from the subdivision. The data were elicited through personal interview . Literacy status of the educational level of selected are were analyzed and found that 45 percent onion farmers were illiterate in the study area. The main objective of the study is to know the problems faced by the onion growers in cultivation and marketing of onion. In this study an attempt has been made to evaluate the various aspects of cultivation and marketing of onion.


Marketing of agricultural goods is more complicated when compared to marketing of non agricultural goods. Farmers are facing many problems in both cultivation and marketing of onion. Agricultural production is generally depends on fertility of land, climate condition, and rain fall. Onion is one of the important agricultural commodity and spice crop. Onion is a perishable agricultural product it requires proper storage facility. Hence the research finds initiative to study the problems of farmers in cultivation and marketing of onion and provides suitable measures for the same
