Description |
A field experiment was carried out during kharif, 2014 at All India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, in order to study genetic variability, divergence and character association in hybrid okra genotypes. It was laid out in the randomized block design with 3 replications taking 12 genotypes of okra. Results revealed that the highest fruit yield per plant and per hectare was recorded in V7 (2014/OKHYB-7). The maximum fruit yield/plant, number of fruits/plant and nodes per plant were also observed in V7. The genotype V1(2014/OKHYB-1) was found to be earliest while V3(2014/OKHYB-3), V4(2014/OKHYB-4) and V11(NBH-180) showed resistance to yellow vein mosaic virus(YVMV) disease. Fruit yield /plant and plant height had moderately high genotypic coefficient of variation, high heritability and genetic advance. Total no of fruits per plot had moderately high genotypic coefficient of variation, high heritability and moderately high genetic advance. It indicated that those characters were less influenced by the environment and accounted for additive gene effects. Therefore, selection for the abovementioned traits would be more successful and effective than others. Duration of fruiting exhibited high positive genotypic correlation as well as highest positive direct effect on fruit yield/plant followed by days to first harvest. The twelve genotypes evaluated were grouped into seven clusters on the basis of genetic affinity or diversity. Inter cluster distance was found to be maximum between the clusters VI and VII followed by the cluster pair IV and V. In order to make effective selection of high yielding genotypes in okra, indirect selection may be exercised through the traits like duration of fruiting and days to first harvest in addition to other yield components like number of fruits/plot, fruits/ plant, fruit yield /plant and plant height. The genotypes V3, V4 and V11 may be included as parents in hybridization programmes to develop varieties/hybrids with resistance/tolerance to YVMV disease. Parents for hybridization may be selected from the clusters IV, V, VI and VII either for developing promising hybrids or obtaining transgressive segregants in future generations.
