Description |
Okhamandal, one of the most important religious centers is situated in Jamnagar district of Gujarat province on the west coast of India. The total landmass covers an area of 70 sq miles, which is marshy, bushy, and uneven topography, has attracted ancient settlers since the Harappan times (3000 BC) and the oldest site discovered at Nageshwar on the northern shores of Okhamandal (Figure 1). The late phase of the Harappan civilization is noticed at Bet Dwarka Island about 5 km from Okha port. Dwarka was another very important port during historical and medieval periods. One of the major attraction for the ancient people was the richness of marine resources around the Okhamandal region particularly chank shell (Turbunella pyrum) which has been used extensively in ancient India for decoration, beads, and was exported to other regions. Important archaeological remains from this area described below.
