Description On 23 March 2005,around 01:00 hrs an iron-ore barge Prapti collided with a Singaporean bulk carrier Maritime Wisdom, anchored about 4 nautical miles off Aguada, rupturing the carrier 's oil tank and spilling about 110 tonnes of Heavy Fuel Oil in the sea. The incident occurred when the barge Prapti, belonging to the Ameya Shipping Company, Goa and carrying about 2000 tonnes iron ore was maneuvering along side bulk carrier Maritime Wisdom to unload its cargo. However, due to rough sea conditions, the carrier's duty officers advised the barge not to do so. As the barge was turning away, it hit the carrier causing a 105x15 mm puncture into its oil tank. The rupture was quickly sealed, but not before 110 metric tonnes oil had spilled into the sea. Transferring the contents of the ruptured tank into another tank within 2 hours reduced further spillage. The oil spread over an area of approximately 2-3 square miles and started moving south easterly off Grandi Island. Soon after the spillage, the Indian Coast Guard (Goa region) and Mormugao Port Trust was combating the oil spill with dispersants. Spraying of the dispersants was carried out using Coast Guard offshore petrol vessels Sagar, Vigraha and interceptor boats. Dornier aircraft were also deployed for spraying of the dispersants. On 24 March 2005,due to dispersant treatment, the thickness of oil and number of oil patches were further reduced. Most of the oil was dissipated. Scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO),Goa (India), along with officials of the Directorate of Fisheries, Goa, carried out preliminary surveys in the oil spill site and the surrounding area. No signs of oil patches were observed in the oil spill site area as well as its vicinity. Air surveillance carried out by the Coast Guard on 25 March 2005, showed very few patches of oil with insignificant oil sheen. Most of the area was found to be clean. The Coast Guard withdrew pollution response on evening of 25 March 2005.
