Description Antiviral activity in four commercially important seaweeds namely; Spatoglossum asperum J. Ag., Padina tetrastromatica Hauck, Sargassum tenerrimum J. Ag. and Stoechospermum marginatum (Ag.) Kuetz was studied on fragments of chorion-allantonic membrane (CAM) of chicken eggs infected with influenza virus strains A/Mississippi/1/85 and B/Jamanashi/1/166/95 for in vitro studies. The reduction of infection was low against virus strain A/Mississippi/1/85 where maximum reduction was 45.4% in the extract of S. tenerrimum. Maximum inhibition of the viral infection was recorded in the extract of S. marginatum (60%) followed by S. asperum (50%) and P. tetrastromatica (50%) against B/Jamanashi/1/166/95.
