Description Digital image processing involves the manipulation and interpretation of digital images with the aid of a computer. This form of remote sensing actually began in the 1960's with a limited number of researchers analysing multispectral scanner data and digitized aerial photographs. However, it was not until the launch of Landsat - 1 in 1972 that digital image data became widely available for land remote sensing applications. Today with the availability of efficient computer hardware and software and digital image data from different spaceborne platforms, digital image processing techniques have gained acceptance for land use applications including specialized applications like archaeology. The purpose of this paper is to introduce broadly the concepts of the digital image processing techniques and highlighting the utility of image processing as a tool in identifying archaeological sites
