Description |
Analyses of current meter records generated in the coastal waters off Beypore (11 degrees 10 minutes S; 75 degrees 48 minutes E) on the southwest coast of India have been made to understand the tidal and non-tidal variability during premonsoon and summer monsoon seasons of year 2000. Information on tidal signals contained in the currents were extracted using harmonic analysis - Least Squares Method and non-tidal component were analyzed using the Chi sub(o) filter. The study established that the signature of the tidal currents are different at the surface and bottom waters in most of the records, suggesting the baroclinic nature of the tide and currents were dominated by diurnal and semidiurnal tidal signals in the observed records. In general, the amplitudes of the diurnal and semi diurnal currents were found to be less than 7 cm/s in the region. Different signatures were displayed by the non tidal currents at surface and bottom layers of water column, thus suggesting the strong seasonal dominance of freshwater discharges of the region
