Description |
Recent research has shown that marine nitrogen cycle is more dynamic, less well understood, and much more exciting than previously thought. However, despite impressive and rapid advances in our understanding of many important aspects of the marine nitrogen cycle, there are a number of fundamental issues that remain unresolved. Keeping this in view, an international workshop, “Significant Processes, Observations, and Transformation in Oceanic Nitrogen (SPOT-ON)” was organized at the Institute for Baltic Sea Research, Warnemuende, Germany, from June 26 to 1 July 2005. Several papers presented at SPOT-ON, were published in a special issue of BIOGEOSCIENCES. This article provides a brief overview of some of the major highlights of SPOT-ON, with particular reference to papers published in the special issue.
