Description The present paper describes the status of the mangrove ecosystem along the Indian Ocean region in terms of climatology and biodiversity. Out of 37 countries surrounded by Indian Ocean, India, Pakistan, countries around Persian gulf, Myanmar, East African countries, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, north eastern Australia, as well as group of islands like Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles and Sri Lanka are covered with mangrove vegetation. Formation of the mangroves is influenced by physical nature of the substratum, estuarine environment and nature of the coast. Mangroves tend to be extensive on the stable, and subsiding coast. Mangroves along India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand are luxuriant, whereas in the countries bordering Persian Gulf are represented with only few mangrove species. The information on the usages and the impacts on the mangroves of the Indian Ocean region call for an urgent measure of conservation and management of mangroves and are dealt in detail in this paper.
