Description The chapter on physical oceanography of the Indian Ocean is written keeping in mind the graduate students and researchers. It starts with a brief introduction (citing latest expeditions) followed by the coastal and near processes (wave climate and tides) through the open ocean processes. With regard to the latter, the seasonal and annual-mean distributions of surface wind vectors, temperature and salinity on various horizontal surfaces, along selected zonal and meridional sections, monthly variations of temperature and salinity at selected locations and watermass structure in the Indian Ocean are discussed and interpreted The large-scale circulation of the Indian Ocean, including the boundary currents, is discussed with a special emphasis on the potential vorticity field in the Bay of Bengal followed by a touch up on the climatic study relating to the meridional overturning in the Indian Ocean.
