The Doppler effect is the change in frequency of the received sound waves/electromagnetic waves when there is a relative motion between the transmitter and the receiver of these waves. This effect is used for diverse applications in different areas of practical interest. For example, the Doppler effect contributed significantly to a greater understanding of the motion of celestial bodies, cosmic objects, stars, and quasars, primarily through measurement of the red shift or blue shift in their spectral lines. Application of this effect in astronomical investigations have greatly added to the present knowledge about the universe. From an operational point of view, the Doppler effect is applied in modern traffic control to detect speeding motorists. The Doppler effect is also used in sports, through Doppler radar systems to measure ball speed. Navigation technology received a boost in the 1960s with the introduction of the satellite navigation system, which applies the Doppler effect. In this system, the satellites transmit their orbital parameters and constant-frequency carriers so that a shipboard Doppler receiver and a computer can obtain an accurate position fix of the ship at the time of a satellite pass above the ship's horizon. Another domain where the Doppler effect plays a role in navigation is the Doppler sonar, which is used for the measurement of cruising speeds of ships and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and the microwave Doppler radar used in aircraft to measure its flight speed. The Doppler sonar can measure the cruising speed of an oceanographic vehicle relative to the seafloor or to a given water mass. In the areas of oceanographic research and operational oceanography, this effect is extensively used for remote measurements of surface and subsurface oceanic circulation. In the present artical, applications of the Doppler effect and the computer in the areas of navigation and some domains of oceanography are briefly reviewed
