Description Spectacular spits of different sizes and variety of shapes bordering west coast of India were mapped with remote sensing techniques. By gathering information on geomorphological and locational parameters of spits, "SPITBASE", a database of spits of the west coast, is organized. The present study describes this database and demonstrates its usefulness and potential for studying nearshore coastal processes including shore drift directions. SPITBASE is useful in managing, analyzing and in interpreting geomorphic events related to spits. Similar information bases on islands, lagoons, cliffs and other landforms would provide complementary base-level information for coastal zone planners
