Description To understand the distribution of trace elements and their controlling factors in the coastal regions of India. Some representative sediment samples from the nearshore regions were selected from the east and west coasts including the regions off the riverine mouths. The analyses showed significant differences in the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn, Al and TOC between the east and west coasts. Their average bulk concentrations along the east coast are: Cu (59.6 ppm), Zn (103.45 ppm), Ni (115.5 ppm), Fe (4.1%) and Mn (516 ppm) while along the west coast their concentrations are: Cu (103.5 ppm), Zn (54.7 ppm), Ni (65.9 ppm), Fe (5.7%) and Mn (619 ppm). No significant relationships are observed between the bulk compositions of elements studied and the TOC indicating that organic matter is not an effective controller of these elements in the near-shore sediments. However, the inter-relationships among these elements are found to be significant indicating a common source for these elements. The partition studies revealed that of the total quantity of these elements, their authigenic fractions amount to 37.6% Cu, 31.53% Zn, 50.4% Ni, 8.4% Fe and 65.5% Mn along the east coast and 31.2% Cu, 25.1% Ni, 8.52% Fe and 28% Mn along the west coast. The authigenic contribution of elements along the east coast decreases in the order Mn is greater than Ni, Ni is greater than Cu, Cu is greater than Zn and Zn is greater than Fe and on the west coast it decreases in the order Cu is greater than Mn, Mn is greater than Ni, Ni is greater than Fe. The study suggested that the flocculation of Fe and Mn and related scavenging of trace elements are mainly responsible for authigenic fractions in the sediments. A close similarity between metal Al data of near-shore sediments and the riverine sediments implies that the colloids of Fe and Mn hydroxides are formed in the estuarine environment, transported through the mouth regions without any modification along with their adsorbed elements and are deposited in the near-shore environment. Additional studies on the coastal sediments along the east and west coasts of India have also been carried out which support these mechanisms
