Monostroma oxyspermum

Description The specimen of Monostroma oxyspermum (Chlorophyceae) were collected in Indian waters from mangrove ecosystem of Shirgao Creek, Ratnagiri, Maharashtra; Terekhol Creek, Goa; and Kali Estuary, Karwar Karnataka. The life history of these were studied. Alternate reproduction was not found to be taking place in this species. Based on its chemical composition, M. oxyspermum is noticed to be rich in carbohydrates. It is suggested that this alga can be easily cultivated on large scale as a food source.
