Description |
The results of the acoustic tomographic studies carried out in five sections of the Northern Indian Ocean is given. The characteristics of the sound speed field of the northern Indian Ocean comprising of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, is dealt with in section 2, followed by the simulation results in section 3, using a ray acoustic model and reference sound speed profile to delineate the acoustic waveguide characteristics in the context of tomography. The generalised inversion model and its inadequacy in reconstructing the layer-averaged as well as box-averaged sound speed anomaly in the case of a winter profile in the Arabian Sea and an eddy profile in the Bay of Bengal is discussed in section 4. Results from a medium range, short duration acoustic tomography experiment in the eastern Arabian Sea during summer 1993 are presented in section 5. The Heard Island experiment, and India's contribution to this joint programme is outlined in section.
