Description Sustainable utilization of aquatic living resources needs accurate assessment. This stress the need for use of Geographic Information System (GIS). In the recent past interest has been generated for use of GIS in various areas of biological oceanography. Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) database records 33 studies pertaining to GIS application in marine biology. Most of the studies are confined to aquaculture, coastal zone or wetland management and fisheries. Biodiversity, natural resource assessment, estuarine ecosystem, productivity, population dynamics, pollution studies and ecological processes are few more fileds where GIS has vital role to play. None of the above studies are from India. The present paper outlines the probable applications of GIS in the field of marine biology and elaborates on the marits and demerits of such an application. It also lists a few of the locally available GIS and their cost-effectiveness. It further elaborates on the data validation that one required to make GIS an accurate and successful too in living resource assessment and utilization from the vast Exclusive Economic Zone of India
