Description |
Recent advances in the field of molecular biology and molecular genetics offer opportunities to exploit the unlimited potential of marine resources. Development of better strains of marine organisms for commercial exploitation through genetic manipulation is now reality. High yielding, fast growing and disease resistant strains of fish, shellfish and algae will boost the aquaculture industry. There may be a solution for all the problems of waste disposal in the marine environment. Considering the variety of bio-active compounds available in marine organisms, the pharmaceutical and other industries can expect more and more new compounds for useful applications in human society. A brief review of the work done in the field of marine biotechnology is given, highlighting the possible opportunities for India.
