Description Microfouling material developed on aluminium panels after immersion in estuarine, coastal, shelf and oceanic waters was analysed for various biological, chemical and biochemical parameters. A single steps scraping with nylon brush removed the highest amount of the microfouling material. Microfouling biomass (as dry weight and/or organic carbon) varied from station to station and was higher in coastal and shelf waters as compared to oceanic waters. Highly significant correlations were observed between bacterial numbers and various chemical and biochemical parameters during short term experiment (less than 10d). The number of fouling diatoms decreased as the immersion depth increased, Nitzschia, Licmophora and Navicula) were the most dominant forms. Similarly, microfouling biomass and carbohydrate content generally decreased as the immersion period and the depth of deployment increased. The mannose/xylose ratio (less than 5.0), the glucose free weight weight percentage distribution of ribose and fucose (greater than 12%) as well as arabinose and galactose (greater than 28%) suggest that phytoplankton and non-woody vascular plant material and grasses appears to be the major sources contributing to carbohydrates of the microfouling material during long term experiments (greater than 10 d). Amino acid content of the microfouling material, however, increased with the immersion depth and was maximum at 60 m. A relative enrichment of glycine with depth was particularly noteworthy. A fouling bacterium Vibrio sp produced acidic exopolysaccharide containing glucose and galactose at the major (70 mol %) and mannose, rhamnose, arabinose, hexosamine, uronic acid and pyruvate as the minor components
