Description |
The present study highlights the utility of satellite derived parameters like SST, precipitation, CMV winds in the lower troposphere etc. in supplementing the in-situ observations. This information can lead to a better understanding of the monsoon circulation and features like onset, active and withdrawal phases of the summer monsoon. Some of the findings of the present study are the following: (1) The establishment of a Low Level Jet off the Somali coast can be used for accurately predicting the onset of the summer monsoon over the Kerala Coast. (2) The weak zonal anomalies of SSTs off the Somali and Arabian coasts and the weak temperature gradient prevalent throughout the monsoon season in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean are associated with the weak monsoon activity/ rainfall over the Indian subcontinent. (3) The annual water vapour flux divergence estimated over the tropical Indian Ocean shows large scale low level convergence of moisture in the Bay of Bengal. It is further proposed to study these aspects in greater detail using more data like outgoing long radiation data from INSAT, Water Vapour and surface winds from SSMI
