Description |
Occurrence of thraustochytrids, yeasts and mycelial fungi in six marine algae was studied. Thraustochytrids and mycelial fungi were recovered from non-surface-sterilized as well as surface-sterilized pieces of algae, whereas yeasts were isolated almost exclusively from non-surface-sterilized ones. Up to 171 yeasts, 43 thraustochytrids and 36 mycelial fungi 10 mm super(2) from algal surface were isolated. Yeasts occurred only in two algae. Ulva fasciata and Centroceras clavulatum, thraustochytrids only in C. clavulatum, Sargassum cinereum and Padina tetrastromatica whilst mycelial fungi occurred in all. Growth experiments in the laboratory indicated that the growth of thraustochytrids was inhibited on live algae, whereas killed algae supported profuse growth. Live algae contained higher amounts of phenolics than killed ones
