Description |
Water masses and their properties have been studied in the Mauritian during September-October, 1987. Surface water is characterizEd. by two water masses: 1) a warm (temp. 27 degrees C) and relatively saline water (salinity 35.3 x 10 sup(-3)) which appears to be centred between 10 degrees and 13 degrees S lat., has low density lying between 22.9 and 23.3, low concentration of nutrients and high dissolved oxygen content (4.5-5.0 ml.l sup(-1)), and (2) a cold (temp. 25 degrees C) and less saline water (salinity 34.8 x 10 sup(-3)) centred around 14-16 degrees S lat. which is also characterizEd. by low density (sigma theta 23.2-23.5), low nutrients and high dissolved oxygen concentration. An attempt has been made to use AOU as a tool to study the movement and properties of water masses that are formed at sea surface
