This paper highlights history of the oceanography of the Indian Ocean. Oceanographic activities during Ancient period, Medieval period, British period, Post-Independence period are briefly discussed. The role of the IIOE, IOC, UNESCO are also discussed. Nearly 50 countries and 40 ships participated in the IIOE programme. The role of research vessels like ORV Gaveshani, ORV Sagar Kanya, RV Sagar Sampada and Samudra Manthan in oceanographic research in India and the role of CSIR and National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, India is also mentioned
