Description Many new nuclear power plants, reactors are proposed along coastal area of Indian coastline apart from the existing ones. All these, being ultimately a heat exchange process, necessitate enormous quantity of cooling water drawn from the sea. The seawater is not only used as intake but also considered as a site for discharge of effluents. The size specific characteristics of a few shore based power stations in the context of coolant water intake and discharge is summarised, and some problems associated with thermal discharges from the oceanographic angle are described
