Description |
Using sequential AVHRR images in November 1983, nearsurface advective velocities are derived in the region Kuroshio south of Japan. For deriving the velocities two methods are used. One is the Method of Cross Correlation (MCC), using image pair, and the other is geostrophic approximation using single image. Both of the velocity vectors are found to be comparable in magnitude and direction. While the approximated geostrophic velocities exhibit the Kuroshio large meander, the MCC velocities failed to derive any velocity vectors being associated with the large meander. The vector fields off Kii peninsula demonstrated an onshore intrusion of Kuroshio water as illustrated in the four sequential images. Near Bungo Sidan the MCC velocities appeared to be the geostrophic surface currents perturbEd. by south easterly winds
