Description |
The main objective of the Marine Archaeological Expedition was to locate the shipwreck suspected to be a hindrance to fishing. Secondly a bathymetry study was conducted to understand geological features and locate submerged structures if any. Side-scan sonar and magnetic survey showed certain features in 10-11 m depth opposite Masalamani Temple and further north opposite Chinnavanagiri. To the south of Tranquebar a feature of the shape of a boat has been registered. Terracotta ring wells were found in the intertidal zone. Offshore survey of shallow waters brought to light submerged brick structures in 5 to 7 m depth between Vanagiri and Poompuhar. The underwater exploration discovered a large shipwreck with the inscription W. BLACKETT. It had a huge quantity of lead ingots.
