Description The bathymetry, magnetic and shallow seismic data were collected between the water depths of 13 to 26 meters north of Ongole to study the tectonic significance of Gundlakamma river towards offshore. The bathymetry in the region is characterized smooth topography with minor undulations and the depth to the seabed varies from 13 to 26 meters. The magnetic data in the region is characterized by high frequency, short wave length anomalies of the order of 50 to 250 nT. The stacked anomalies depict shallow basement structures perpendicular to the coast, trending NW-SE. This structural lineation when extrapolated landward correlates well with the Gundlakamma river lineation north of Ongole. The shallow seismic section along the coast parallel profile of this region shows a channel around 30m below seabed at water depths of around 15 meters. The Gundlakamma River lineation in the offshore region inferred from the magnetic data correlates well with the axis of channel observed from the seismic reflection data. Hence the channel clearly suggests the possible extension of Gundlakamma River in the offshore region during Holocene period. The Gundlakamma River lineation on land is associated with epicenters of frequent earth tremors of 3-6 in magnitudes all along. However, no earth tremors have been reported over the offshore Gundlakamma River lineation, though earth tremors are observed offshore at 2300m water depth
