Description |
Growing evidences, the world over, are pointing towards a new perspective on ‘farmer innovation system’ consisting of on-farm innovations and innovators. With strong roots in social learning and co-learning, this framework presents a holistic view on farmer innovations as manifestations of adaptability to local problems including those caused by climate change, besides the curiosity and opportunity dimensions. The present paper tries to understand what is innovation? what are its types? and who are those innovators? These questions are answered by an exploratory research carried out on profile of documented farmer innovations in India. Results indicate that most of the farm innovations are outcome followed by process, and innovators have diverse socio-economic profile. Research and policy support are imminent for mainstreaming ‘informal farmer innovation system’ for livelihood secure and climate resilient farming. The paper recommends facilitative role by formal institutions for an enabling ecosystem to promote farmer innovations for local adaptations. |
