The bombardment of the polymeric materials with Swift Heavy Ions (SHI) results in the change of their free volume properties which have strong correlation with macroscopic properties of the polymeric material. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) provides direct information about the dimension, content and hole size distribution of free volume in polymers. Makrofol-N polycarbonate films (40 μm) were irradiated with ⁴⁰Ar ions of energy 14.9 MeV/n to the fluences of 10⁵ ions/cm² from UNILAC, GSI Darmstadt, Germany. The effect of ion irradiation on free volume and characterization by Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) has been studied. Observed lifetime spectra were resolved into three components and o-Ps lifetime component was associated with the pick off annihilation of positronium trapped by the free volume. The o-Ps lifetime and the average free volume are found to increase on irradiation. |
