Among the oil seed crops, rapeseed and mustard are very important and grown in about 3726.2 thousand hectare in India with an annual production of 2.63 million tones. Many insects/pests have been reported to inflict damage on rapeseed mustard group of crops, but the most serious pest is Lipaphis erysimi. It not only affects the seed production but also severely reduces the quality and quantity of the crop. The nymphs and adults suck the sap from the leaves, inflorescence and pods. The oil obtained from Ricinus communis seeds and Neriwn indicum leaves was sprayed on the potted plants infested with counted number of nymphs and adults of apterous viviparous females. Ricinus communis (seed) oil was found highly effective as it causes 100% mortality in both the nymphs and adults at 1.5% concentration in 24 hrs whereas Nerium indicum (leaf) oil caused 85.33% mortality in nymphs and 80% mortality in adults in same concentration and time duration. The fecundity was also reduced significantly with both the oils. Therefore, both the oils appeared to be potent insecticides to protect the mustard crop against mustard aphid(Lipaphis erysimi). |
