Green mussel, Perna viridis and the clam, Meretrix meretrix collected from Mumbai waters were examined for the bioaccumulation of Paralytic Shellfish Toxin. Bioassay experiment conducted on Mice, revealed accumulation of the toxin in sub lethal amount. HPLC analysis showed that Crude toxin extract of P. viridis possessed GTX-2 & GTX-3 and N-Sulfocarbamoyl toxins C1 & C2 . The extract from M. meretrix contained N-Sulfocarbamoyl toxins C1 & C2, decarbamoyl toxins and carbonate toxins, i.e. dcGTX/STX. These two shellfishes were subjected to Ozone and chlorine treatment for depuration of the toxin. Specimens became nontoxic in 10 days of treatment in ozonised water and 15 days treatment in chlorinated water. |
