Title Restriction profile of amplified mitochondrial DNA of wild shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius) populations of India

Creator Shekhar, M S
Chandra, P Kishore

Description 65-68
Mitochondrial
DNA (mtDNA) ribosomal genes of Penaeus monodon collected from two wild
populations of east coast and west coast of south India were amplified by polymerase
chain reaction (PCR), which showed amplified DNA products of 415 base pairs (bp)
size and 520 bp size for 12s ribosomal DNA (12s rDNA) and 16s ribosomal DNA (16s
rDNA) genes respectively. Restriction endonuclease analysis of the amplified mtDNA
ribosomal genes was used to assess the genetic variation among the two wild populations
of Penaeus monodon  . Alu I, Cla I
and Hae III showed monomorphism suggesting

the existence of genetic variation
between the two wild shrimp populations studied. Hence, the restriction enzyme
analysis of mtDNA in identifying the shrimp populations may be used as a valuable
technique for formulating shrimp breeding programmes.
