Inspite of tremendous pollution stress on the intertidal region of Mumbai, many parts of this region are still crowded by diversified molluscan fauna. Nerita oryzarum, N. polita, N. albicilla and Neritina crepidularia of family neritidae were found to inhabit Mumbai shores throughout the year. Population density and biomass of these neritids varied throughout the year showing highest population and biomass during December to March and lowest during June to September. The logarithmic length - weight relationships were worked out to be log y= 2.4528 log x - log 0.4242 for N.oryzarum, log y = 2.3241 log x - log 0.3798 for N.polita, log y = 1.4794 log x + log 0.9546 for N. albicilla, log y = 2.9905 log x - log 0.0983 for Neritina crepidularia. Very high correlation coefficient obtained for these neritids indicates a strong correlation between the total length and weight of animal. |
