Description 343-348
The distribution of
olive ridley sea turtles in the nearshore waters of Rushikulya rookery in
Orissa coast of India
was studied during 2003-04 breeding season. Locations of turtle mating at sea
were recorded and water depth, air and sea surface temperature was also recorded
from all such locations. The estimated surface density of individual turtles
was
35.1/km2 (CV = 11.22%) and the encounter rate was 3.68 turtles/km. Maximum
offshore area utilized by mating pairs was 57.92 sq. km. Maximum turtle mating
pairs occurred in depths of 16 - 28 m ( = 26 m) and 2 to 5 km
from shore. Mating pair sightings were also greatest between 11.00 hrs - 13.00 hrs
and at sea surface temperatures of 25o-26oC ( = 24.6oC). Local fishing practices and types of
fishing nets used in the area are not found to influence turtle breeding
activities. Factors such as time of the day, sea surface temperature and sea
state were found to influence the turtle congregations. Long-term offshore
population monitoring of turtles should be carried out to examine population
trends at Rushikulya.
