Present study provides information about the cyst assemblages as an indication of eutrophication in the harbour. Two sediment core samples were collected from the Eastern Harbour during 2008. Fifteen genera with 26 species were identified from the two cores with total cyst abundance ranging from 138 to 1296 cysts [g-1] [s2] dry wt. Protoperidinium spp. cysts contributed a maximum of 43% to the total cysts, followed by Alexandrium spp. 21% and Diplopsalis cysts with 13%. During this study, six cyst genera with thirteen heterotrophic dinoflagellate species were identified with cyst concentration ranging from 12 to 820 cyst [g-1] [s3] dry wt. Total heterotrophic cyst showed a significant positive correlation with diatoms, sedimentary TP and TN, indicating that increase in diatoms and nutrient concentrations are the main cause of heterotrophic dinoflagellate. |
